HSPCA

Here are the results of the by-election:

Lib Dem – 1093 votes
Green - 812 votes
Labour - 808 votes
Conservative - 198 votes

It was a tough campaign, a lot of tactical voting against Labour and us for the Lib Dem’s! Well done to everyone who helped out – a great effort and we have made headway into Kentish Town for the future!

Camden Gazette – “Tory campaigners help catch thief”

From an article in the Camden Gazette, published on 06/12/06:

“A TEENAGE thief in a sandwich shop was wrestled to the floor outside – by Tory anti-crime campaigners.

The 14-year-old, who was with a fellow thief, was chased out of Greggs bakery in Kentish Town High Street, Kentish Town, on Saturday by a woman employee, 25, who was punched in the face by the boy.

But he was pinned down by campaigners canvassing on behalf of Richard Merrin, the Conservative candidate in the Kentish Town by-election.

Greggs worker Kathy Brown believed her workmate would be off work for several days.

Mr Merrin, 40, a public relations consultant, said: “We were talking about crime. It just shows the importance of the police station in Holmes Road, which is under threat of closure.”

A Camden police spokeswoman said: “A 14-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and was conveyed to Kentish Town police station. He was released on bail until January pending inquiries.”

TOMORROW (Thursday) voters will head to the ballot boxes in Kentish Town, following the resignation of Labour stalwart Lucy Anderson…”

Kentish Town by-election campaign launch

HSPCA

“You will probably have heard by now that there will be a by-election in Kentish Town in December, caused by the resignation of a Labour Councillor.Holborn & St Pancras Conservative Association has selected local resident Richard Merrin, whom I am sure is known to many of you. He is an excellent local candidate, living in the heart of the ward. We have decided to fight this election hard with a very busy election timetable and even a few hours of your time will make a difference.

We will be starting with our first leaflet delivery on Saturday morning (TOMORROW) from 8am. If that is a little early for you, we will be meeting again at 10.30am at Richard’s house (25 Countess Road) for some bacon sandwiches & coffee and will head out again for a few hours. We need to cover the entire ward this weekend, as the Greens and Lib Dems are ahead of us!

Please make your way to Kentish Town Tube station and telephone us for directions from there.

During the campaign, if you would like to help please contact either Richard Merrin or the campaign manager Tim Crockford.”

Kentish Town by-election candidate selected

HSPCA“I very pleased to announce that Richard Merrin, who played a leading role in the Highgate campaign earlier this year and who narrowly missed being elected on that occasion, has been selected as provisional candidate for the impending council by-election in Kentish Town Ward, subject to approval by the Association Exec scheduled for 13 November.

The Association will be fighting a vigorous campaign and aiming to increase the Conservative share of the vote. As with any election, any help that you can give will be gratefully received.

Tim Crockford, who has experience of working as an Agent in Kent, has agreed to act as campaign manager, and will be working with Richard to draw up a timetable for leafletting and canvassing.”

Local Conservatives to fight Kentish Town seat

Holborn & St Pancras Conservatives will be contesting the Kentish Town by-election, and this weekend will be selecting a strong local candidate for the contest. Any local members who would like to be considered should email secretary@hspca.og.uk

HSPCA Chairman Cllr Paul Barton said: “Although on the council Conservatives work in partnership with the Lib Dems, for example bringing a new school to the borough and safeguarding the future of Kentish Town Baths, the partnership agreement is not an electoral pact. The public deserve the chance to make a free choice between the different parties. Experience shows that every Conservative elected to Camden Council is a voice against crime and anti-social behaviour, for better housing, for better services rather than extortionate and wasteful taxes and for a cleaner environment.

In recent years Kentish Town Ward has not been a target ward for the Conservatives, but the success seen this year in nearby Gospel Oak and Highgate Wards show that there are no longer any no-go areas for Conservatives.”
