George Lee selected for Holborn & St Pancras

On Thursday 12th March George Lee was selected to be the Conservative Party candidate for the forthcoming general election in an open primary.

George Lee was born in modest circumstances in Hong Kong, and came to
the UK aged 10 speaking no English. His first career was in the
Metropolitan Police, in which he reached the rank of Chief Inspector (he
was the highest- ranking Chinese police officer in the UK, was sector
commander for Paddington Green, and was involved in a number of high
profile cases, eg. Triad murders in Soho). He was a founder member of
the Black Police Association (which aims to encourage members of ethnic
minorities to join the police), and attended Trinity College Cambridge
as a mature student on a scholarship scheme for police officers
earmarked for the top. During his police career he lived off Russell
Square and worked in the constituency on vice, and was on duty during
the Kings Cross Fire in 1987.

Since leaving the police force he has worked in as a civil servant and
in business in various senior director positions at Vodaphone and
T-Mobile, and more recently as Managing Partner of Mercer Management
Consulting. He is (as far as we know) the first Chinese candidate
selected by any major party, showing that the Conservatives are truly a
modern and inclusive party.

Of the selection Paul Barton, Chairman of HSPCA stated:

“I am very pleased to announce that George Lee has been selected to fight
Holborn & St. Pancras at the next General Election.

The final four applicants – all of them of a high calibre – were
interviewed at a packed Open Primary, at which any local resident could
register to vote, but I am pleased to say that the result was ratified
by an overwhelming majority of the paid-up Association Members present.

George Lee was born in modest circumstances in Hong Kong, and came to
the UK as a child speaking no English. He is not a career politician,
but has long and varied life experience, which include reaching the rank
of Chief Inspector in the Metropolitan Police Force, working with
various government departments, and in business for the last decade. He
also attended Trinity College, Cambridge as a mature student

George brings an ideal combination of personal experience and freshness
of political approach to the role of PPC, and I’m sure we will all be
working as hard as possible to get the best possible result at the
General Election (due by early summer 2010 at the latest).”
